Welcome to Phil Hinde’s Website

has been painting for many years; originally taking it up as a hobby while serving in the Merchant Navy. He started painting with oils using a palette knife technique, developing and adapting it to his own style, and twenty five years ago switched to painting mainly with watercolour because he felt it was time for a change and “I felt that some of the effects that I was trying to achieve like lightness and delicacy were not possible with oil”.

No longer a hobby, Phil has been working full time as a landscape artist for the past twenty years and sells his pictures throughout the country with many going to Europe and the USA.

His favourite subjects are of his own area of Essex & Suffolk with its old blackboarded barns and pink washed cottages and of course the Cotswolds with its picturesque villages of warm yellow ochre stone set amongst the undulating landscape. Some of his more recent work tends towards the abstract.

Phil, now in his early seventies completely self taught, preferring to learn from his own mistakes and to develop his own unique style of balance and counterchange as displayed at this website. Although he has not yet returned to his original medium of oils, he often uses acrylic to get back to his earlier style. His pictures have been published as limited edition prints and greetings cards. He has recently had some of his work published by Readers Digest as an instructional “How to Paint” book.

Much of his time is spent giving instruction to others on the technique of watercolour and acrylic painting and he has giving many demonstrations on the practical aspects of landscape painting to local societies. He teaches on a regular basis at his home and runs day courses at Great Hallingbury in Essex. For the past eight years Phil has been tutoring art painting holidays in France and Spain. He has also directed  three day painting courses at Lulworth Cove in Dorset, England for the past two years.

Phil has produced a fifty minute video/dvd which illustrates some of his techniques. It is an ideal instructional video/dvd for those with little experience in watercolour and for those wishing to improve in their watercolour techniques.
